The legal industry is one of the most ironic examples of e-security in terms of document protection. On one hand, firms have a duty of care to protect clients files from un-authorised access - mostly this is achieved by hoping the file never leaves trusted hands; if it does, disclaimers take up much of the lawyer's email signature to attempt to indemnify the firm. On the other hand, parts of the industry earn fees through litigation in cases of privacy breach.
For the most part, legal firms would prefer to secure the files of all clients with confidence - as opposed to the fee earned from a privacy breach trial; after all, if the firm's reputation for client privacy and integrity is breached, it has little to trade on.
Cocoon Data provides software that should be used by every legal firm of repute around the world. Files can be sent and received with confidence and the rights to access the files can be managed (changed/revoked) by the legal owner/custodian at any time. Importantly, the Secure Objects reader is free and thus every client of every firm need only install it once and confidence is assured. It also means that firms can exchange files on any given transaction with confidence as to who it is that is accessing the file and the version. Most importantly, by making Secure Objects part of business practice, firms are actively demonstrating to their clients that which is preached - privacy and integrity. For most lawyers, the annual subscription cost of the desktop version would be less than a couple of hours work...
